MARTINEZ — Two weeks after a ransomware attack, the Contra Costa County Library System says it’s making progress in restoring some services, such as public WiFi and printing.

Brooke Converse, spokeswoman for the library system, said public WiFi and printing services are being restored at the rate of about two branches a day in the 26-branch system. An update posted Monday on the library system’s website says services have been restored at the Antioch, Bay Point, Brentwood, Concord, Orinda, Pittsburg and San Pablo branches.

The library system is “very eager” to restore all of its services, Converse said, adding that the internal email system is still down. She said there hasn’t been another attack since the one on Jan. 3.

IT experts are monitoring the computer system and working to prevent future attacks, she said.

Other services that have been restored include Ancestry, California Driver Education, Cliff Notes, New York Times digital, public desktop computers with internet access, and Rosetta Stone.

Library card users meanwhile still can’t get into the library system’s website to reserve, check out or search for books or tapes. Email and text notifications about holds and renewals are not available.

The Sheriff’s Office and District Attorney’s Office are still doing a criminal investigation of the attack, Converse said.

To find out about holds, library users are asked to call 800-984-4636. As of Jan. 8, all holds  will remain on the shelf, according to the release.

When the ransomware attack was reported Jan. 3, library officials said affected servers were taken offline, though libraries would remain open as regularly scheduled.

“We apologize for the inconvenience this outage is causing our patrons and ask for patience as we work to get all services back online,” Contra County County Librarian Melinda Cervantes said in a Jan. 3 statement. “We are working closely with law enforcement, including IT experts, to gather information and prevent future attacks.”

In its statement, the library said it collects names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and birth dates, but not Social Security numbers or store credit card payment information. It stopped collecting driver’s license information last year and removed all of it from customer records.

Library patrons with questions about affected services may call library administrative staff at 925-608-7700 during business hours.
